Europe urgently needs more innovators to stay competitive in the coming decades and to spur economic growth. The large number of well-educated women researchers who, for various reasons, including lack of awareness, do not consider entrepreneurship as an option, represents a tremendous untapped pool of innovation.
Awards have a strong potential to drive innovation through the recognition of achievements and the promotion of role models. Therefore, the European Commission created in 2011 a Prize for Women Innovators to increase public awareness of this issue and to encourage women to exploit the commercial and business opportunities offered by their research projects and become entrepreneurs. After the success of the forerunners of the competition in 2011 and 2014, the Commission intends to continue its drive to spotlight women researchers who have brought outstanding innovations to the market. The prizes will boost the public awareness of the, potential, importance and contribution of women researchers to entrepreneurship and will encourage entrepreneurial women to become innovators. Although women are more and more active in research, there are still too few women creating innovative enterprises. This represents an untapped potential for Europe which needs all resources to remain competitive and find solutions to our societal challenges. The prizes will therefore help to achieve the objectives of the Europe 2020 strategy.
The Commission plans to award up to three "EU Prize for Women Innovators 2016" following a European-wide contest. The prizes are addressed to women who have founded or co-founded a company and who themselves or their company have benefitted from EU funding related to Research and Innovation. The prizes will not reward research or innovation proposed for the future, but only achievements that have been already obtained by the candidate
The contest will target women who have benefited from EU research and innovation programmes and who have combined their scientific excellence with an aptitude for business in setting up innovative enterprises. Entries will have to clearly state the involvement of the contestants in the research and innovation activities and the potential of their product or service to access the market, also highlighting the relevant economic and societal impact.
Topic: JTI-CS2-2015-CFP02-AIR-01-09: Experimental characterization of turbulent pressure fluctuations on realistic Contra-Rotating Open Rotor (CROR) 2D airfoil in representative high subsonic Mach number.
Topic: JTI-CS2-2015-CFP02-AIR-02-12: System development for optical fiber sensing technology measurements for industrial aeronautical contexts: composite manufacturing plants, structural test platforms and airborne conditions
Topic: JTI-CS2-2015-CFP02-FRC-01-01: Development and demonstration of materials and manufacturing process for ultra high reliability electric Anti-ice/De-ice thermal layers for high strain civil rotor blades and airframe sections of tiltrotor
Topic: JTI-CS2-2015-CFP02-FRC-01-03: Development and validation of an optimised gearbox housing structural design and manufacturing process, based on additive layer manufacturing concept leading to a flight cleared demonstrator.
Topic: JTI-CS2-2015-CFP02-FRC-01-06: Design, development, testing and qualification of a high-reliability integrated fuel gauging and distribution system providing active CG management in a civil tiltrotor
Topic: JTI-CS2-2015-CFP02-SYS-02-13: Analysis, validation and data collection of design and operating parameters for advanced cabin ventilation concepts related to future aircraft energy management systems
The goal of this contest is to improve the quality of citizens' health and well-being by helping them to better monitor their food intake with the use of a food scanner.
The technological solution(s) submitted should benefit a wide range of the EU population, from healthy citizens to citizens suffering from food intolerance, obesity or allergies, by providing meaningful information on their food consumption.
This prize is expected to stimulate creative thinking across established industrial and academic research organisations, resulting in breakthrough solutions that can seed and drive the European industry forward by breaking down the limits in food intake measurements and detection.
Approaches to be taken by the contestants are not prescribed and may include novel sensing and data processing technologies, amongst others.
This Horizon 2020 Inducement Prize will thus be awarded to the most significant development towards a portable solution that, alone or in combination with other devices (e.g. smartphones), will enable the European citizens to detect nutrition facts and allergens in several types of food in a precise, efficient and timely manner, using a non-invasive and non-destructive approach, with the goal to help them make optimal informed choices and to improve their health and well-being.
The Food Scanner Horizon Prize is a €1 000 000 challenge prize which will be awarded to the technological solution(s) that will best provide citizens with relevant information about their food consumption.
The winning entries should take a step forward from current technologies and solutions in terms of food intake measurement and will have to prove economic viability. In addition, they will have to be demonstrated through clear experimental results.
Starting from 2012-13 is expected to be activated a Graduate Degree in Medicine and Surgery in English, with a placement test in English and addressed only to a number of about 30 students with non-Italian passport.
