History of Gomel State Medical University has its origins in 1990, when the Decree of the BSSR Council of Ministers on 11/14/1990 284 number and order of the Minister of Health of the BSSR 20.11.1990 number 188, in order to ensure the training of doctors and highly qualified specialists for the most affected by the disaster at Chernobyl Gomel and Mogilev, Gomel State medical Institute was opened in November 1990.
Head of the Institute , Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Bandazhevsky Yury Ivanovich.
The opening of the institute attended by many, including the administration of the city and region: AA Grakhovsky, NG Voitenko, VS Sparrow, LA Shemetkov, ASShahinian, VV Lazarevic and others whose assistance is invaluable.
Creating the university was due to the acute need for medical personnel in the Gomel and Mogilev regions affected by the Chernobyl accident, as well as the need to conduct scientific research on the health effects of the Chernobyl disaster and the search for ways of their pr eodoleniya.
In December 1990, the Decree of the BSSR Council of Ministers № 557r was the preparatory department for 120 people, for the operation which have been allocated funding from the reserve fund of the Byelorussian SSR CM.

Great contribution to the development and improvement of educational-methodical and scientific-research work of the Gomel State Medical Institute at various times made : EK Kapitonov, NN Ostreiko, BKKuznetsov, VA Ignatenko, TG Glyakova, LA Bondarenko, VF Aleynikov, SI Yupatov, NP Gooden, LKStasenko, ETC. Barinov, VP Soybeans, NV Tymoshenko, TG Havlin, DV Vvedensky, LN Zhurova, AASheviakov, NF Yakushev, AV Lysenkova, II Mistyukevich, EI Sokolovsky, EA Boyarinova, EN Toporkova, FIKayipov and many others.
During the period of 1991-1999. Gomel State Medical Institute was released 1037 doctors trained more than 20 candidates of sciences, contributing to the expansion of scientific and medical community of Gomel.
In 1999, the rector was appointed doctor of medical sciences, professor Sergey Lark.
In 2000, the decision of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Belarus was opened Faculty of training of specialists for foreign countries.
On the basis of the Republic of Belarus Ministry of Health order from 05.06.2001 number 133, and the decision of the Gomel Regional Executive Committee of 24.07.2001 number 606 Institute was renamed the State Higher Educational Institution "Gomel State Medical Institute."
In accordance with the Decree of the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Belarus from 13.06.2003 number 242 Gomel State Medical University is accredited in the Republic of Belarus to meet university-type institution and was renamed the Educational Establishment "Gomel State Medical University."
During the period of 2000-2006. It was released in 1578 doctors, including 119 specialists for foreign countries; prepared and defended 55 candidates and doctors of sciences, 8 of them foreigners.
Since May 2007 the establishment of Education "Gomel State Medical University " is headed by Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Anatoly Lyzikov.
In April 2010, the Gomel State Medical University - the first among the medical schools of the Republic of Belarus - received a certificate of international standard for quality management system requirements of ISO 9001: 2008 .
This certificate certifies that the quality management system design and implementation of educational activities in the field of medical education: pre-university (preparatory courses, preparatory department);undergraduate (first and second level of education); graduate (internship, internship, clinical residency, postgraduate) - in accordance with ISO 9001: 2008.
In March 2012, the University is accredited by the State Committee for Science and Technology and the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus as a scientific organization.
In April 2013, the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Belarus held another university qualification.
Between the years 2007-2015. It was released 3857 doctors, including 296 specialists for foreign countries;prepared and defended 73 candidate and doctor of sciences, 4 of them foreign nationals
